Grandmothers Weep at the Gates
Wednesday, 21 November 2007

The “1000 Grandmothers” brought their grief to the gates of Ft. Benning this past weekend during the annual vigil and protest of the School of the Americas/Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.  The white kerchief’d grandmothers and other elders led the estimated 25,000 participants in wailing, or keening, their anguish for the victims of the graduates of the military training school, who return to their Latin American countries skilled in the methods of military tactics and operations taught at the army base.

Quilt Square

Grannies: Out with the needles and thread!

The theme is Grandmothers' hearts.Let your square reflect your vision of grandmotherly love, strength, resistance to empire and nurturing and healing of this world. We especially want to honor Rufina Amaya  (perhaps making her square the centerpiece of the quilt). Rufina was the only survivor of the 1981 massacre at El Mozote in El Salvador perpetrated by SOA graduates.Rufina died in March. ♥

Grandmothers Tea Party

Holly Near and Anne Feeney were among the 1000 grandmothers gathered in Columbus, Ga. at our 2nd Tea Party. Holly Near sang our signature song, 1000 Grandmothers, to a most appreciative group of women committed to shutting down the School of Americas.  This year we again enjoyed a rousing series of songs from "The Raging Grannies," led by grannies from Western Massachusetts.

Mothers Acting Up

A group of Mothers and Grandmothers moving from concern to action on behalf of the world's children.

Raging Grannies are on the rise all over the country. These audacious grannies from the mountains of Western North Carolina were caught on film during a recent guerrilla appearance in Asheville. See the YouTube clip: Raging Grannies on the move.

The HipGrandma Handbook, has an article by 1000 grannies founder Cathy Webster. Check it out!

Women in Black stand in silent vigil in many U.S. cities and throughout the world calling for an end to all violence and providing a public space to grieve the harm done by militarism, violence and war. One or two women can pick a busy corner, dress in black, stand in silence with a simple sign, and begin. Others will join you.

Granny Peace Brigade began Oct. 17, 2005, when a group of women, many grandmothers, attempted to enlist in the U.S. Military to replace the grandchildren deployed in Iraq. on Oct. 17 2005.

If you would like to add your event to our website, please send an email to Cathy at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

White Kerchiefs in Solidarity with Mothers of Plaza de Mayo
Monday, 02 October 2006

In solidarity with Madres de Plaza de Mayo, we would like to gather at the gates of the School of the Americas wearing the "Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo" signature white kerchiefs.

The mothers are a symbol of courage; leading the struggle for justice, they started their demonstrations while the junta was still in power. Several of them, including their founder, Azucena Villaflor de Vicenti, disappeared themselves as a result.

A Thousand Grandmothers

Words and music by Holly Near

Send in a thousand grandmothers
They will surely volunteer
With their ancient wisdom flowing
They will lend a loving ear

First they'll form a loving circle
Around the wounded wing
Then contain the brutal beasts of war
Sweet freedom songs they'll sing

A lullaby much stronger
Than bombs and threats to kill
A force unlike we've ever seen
Will break the murderer's will

To the prisons we'll invite them
The most violent men will weep
When 1000 women hold them strong
And pray their souls to keep

Let them rock the few who steal the most

And rule with youthful charms
So they'll see the damage that they do
And will fall into grandma's arms
2000 loving arms

If you think these women are too soft
To face the world at hand
Then you've never known
the power of love

And you fail to understand

An old woman holds a powerful force
When she no longer needs to please
She can cut your shallow life to bits
And bring you to your knees
We’d best get down on our knees

And pray for a thousand grandmothers
Will you please come volunteer
No longer tucked deep out of sight
Will you bring your power here?
Will you bring your power here?
